Rambling about Medieval Misconceptions™
Recently I was having a conversation with someone, and it led to the topic of how frustrating I find what seems to be an overwhelmingly common sentiment amongst people surrounding the Middle Ages; that it was dirty, intellectually-backwards, and overall, a terrifying period of history. We continued talking about this idea of 'presentism' as we dubbed it (no clue if that's a term that's actually used), and I felt that why not ramble about it here for a bit.
That's what this is for after all no?The whole concept of the Medieval period being so backwards no doubt has been perpetuated continually throughout history; with perhaps the most obvious culprit being the misinterpretation of the phrase 'The Dark Ages' - which, despite the clarifying regarding the true meaning that has gone on, is still seen by many as a term referring to intellectual decline, or suppression.
